Cloud in a Jar

Could you imagine holding a cloud in your hand? It may sound bizarre because nobody has hands that are long enough to reach that high. Fortunately, there is a way you can create your own cloud in a jar!

Here is what you will need:

  • A jar with a lid
  • 1/3 cup of hot water
  • Ice
  • Hairspray
  1. Pour hot water in a jar and try swirling it around the jar to warm up the sides.
  2. Turn the lid upside down and place a bunch of ice cubes on the lid and let it stay for 20 seconds.
  3. Remove the lid and quickly spray some hairspray into the jar
  4. Replace the lid with the ice still on top. You will start to see the cloud form
  5. When you see a good amount of condensation form in the jar, remove the lid and watch the cloud come into the air

This experiment will dip a SUPERGirl’s toes in weather science and teach them how clouds form. Have fun doing this experiment and share with SGSF how your cloud looks!
